7 Reasons to Provide a Summer Camp Experience for Your Child


No matter the age, whenever a conversation about summer camp comes up, those who have “been to camp” talk passionately about their experience of action-packed adventure, life-long friendships, testing their limits, unrestrained laughter and accomplishing new things. Summer camp provides a positive, encouraging environment where one can have fun without the peer pressure found elsewhere. If you are trying to decide about this being one of the options for your child this summer, consider the reasons why you would give the gift of camp to them.
1. Experiencing adventures and activities in a unique environment. A camp environment is unlike anywhere else. Your child will experience the dynamics of the outdoors with a diversity of kids, often in a small group — making this unlike a classroom or other small group participation. The activities are designed to challenge campers in an encouraging environment to help them grow exponentially in areas of self-confidence, independence, leadership, trust, friendship skills, social comfort, values and decision-making. A lot of positive change can happen in a week or two at camp.
2. Unplugging. At many traditional camps, like Deer Run Camps in Thompson’s Station, Tenn., kids and teens are able to unplug and leave the distractions of technology at home enabling them to connect face-to-face for an extended amount of time with other kids and young-adult role models. Homeschool Family Day Camp at Deer Run

If you are looking for a special day your family can enjoy together, register for Deer Run’s annual Homeschool Family Day Camp that takes place on Friday, April 29, 2016 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $10 per person and is free for ages 4 and under. Your family can experience a day filled with a variety of camp activities. A preschool play area is provided for little ones. Activities include…

Additional recreation is available for older kids, grade 3 and up:
· Giant Swing: $6 per person — Swing high above the game field.
· Leap of Faith: No Additional Cost — Climb the 33-ft pole and leap off the platform at the top to ring the bell!
· Paintball: $10 per person — 1-hr playtime, equipment rental and 1 hopper of paint. Chest protectors/vests & extra paint are available for purchase on site.
 *Minimum & maximum height & weight requirements apply to fit the safety harness on Giant Swing and Leap of Faith. Most 3rd graders meet the minimum requirements.

Advance registration is highly recommended especially for the additional recreation options. Catch & release fishing from the bank is allowed. However, the lake is closed for swimming and other water activities.

Bring a picnic lunch plus a tablecloth, blanket and/or chairs for your family to enjoy on the property. Snacks, beverages, apparel and other merchandise are available at the Camp Store from 12 to 2 p.m. The dining facility is not open for meals. The event takes place rain or shine.

Deer Run is located on 100 scenic wooded acres, 10 minutes from downtown Franklin and 20 minutes from Spring Hill at 3845 Perkins Road, Thompson’s Station, TN.

Summer Camp adventure for your kids and family can be found at Deer Run — located on 100 wooded acres ten miles southwest of downtown Franklin. Because Deer Run is a traditional camp without the distractions of technology, campers can focus on relationships, physical activity and challenges while having fun. The staff-to-camper ratio is lower than required standards enabling closer relationships with the counselors and other campers plus a better camper experience.

Overnight Camps: One-week sessions for preteen (grades 3–5), middle school (grades 6–8) and high school (grades 9–12). Middle school campers also have an option for two-week sessions.
